OSTEOPOROSIS - PREVENTION WITH PILATES

Calcium is essential for building and maintaining healthy bone.

Vitamin D is also needed because it helps your body absorb calcium.

Following a healthy, well-balanced diet can help you get these and other important nutrients throughout life.

Other tips for prevention:

Avoid drinking excess alcohol

Don't smoke

Get regular exercise (Pilates is a good choice)

Exercise is an effective, inexpensive and healthy way to prevent and treat osteoporosis.
Exercise works for osteoporosis prevention because it places stress on bones, which results in increased bone mass. This is especially true for weight bearing and weight training types of exercises.
Exercise also has added benefits beyond osteoporosis treatment and prevention such as reduced risk of heart disease, weight management and the prevention of high blood pressure. Calcium, the major component of bones, is not well absorbed unless a demand for it is created through exercise.

One emphasis within Pilates is the alignment of the body - elongating the spine and aligning it with the pelvis, hips, legs, feet, shoulders and head.
Additionally, breathing and concentration are pivotal to every exercise. If you are more "grounded" and centered in your mind, your body will respond accordingly and you may even be less likely to trip.
Furthermore, balance and control play a large role in the Pilates repertoire, regardless of whether you are on the mat or using the machines.
